I’m super excited for the guest from the archived interviews we have today, Stephanie Vedder, she was a marketing consultant, and with her business, she was in the top 5% in the United States, and now she’s joined our team!
Today, Stephanie will explain the point where she went wrong in her business, and how she turned it back around:
My downfall was that I would say yes to almost any project. I think I was living in a place of scarcity where if somebody wanted to work with me, even if it didn’t feel right, I just had this overwhelming need to help people. If I liked somebody, I wanted to help them. I took on clients that were not the perfect fit for me, whether it was personality, whether it was solutions, whatever that might be. I just didn’t have the type of wow clients that I wanted. Now I choose who I want to work with and the relationships and the partnerships that I have now are so much more meaningful, they’re more enjoyable, they’re more profitable. It’s just been a whole life changing mindset switch.
It sounds really simple. “Just go out there and work with the kind of people you want or charge what you’re worth.” However it’s very hard to adopt wholeheartedly if you don’t really believe in yourself. I felt like I wasn’t good enough. I constantly compared myself to other people. This is where Steve helped shift my mindset and my processes.
My success has been my approach to meeting clients, where I’m putting myself, the kind of conversations that I’m having. It’s about just listening to people and not being salesy, being authentic, being sincere, having integrity. I had that designation of sales professional for 15 years, but I’ve never felt like a salesperson. I think it gets a bad rep. I mean, if you’re in business, you’re in sales. For me, it’s more about finding those win-win situations. Is this going to be a win for me? Is it going to be a win for them? If I make someone an offer to work with me, it means that I believe very strongly that I can help them.
I put a lot of thought into it. Sometimes I’ll meditate on it, I’ll think about it. If I’m inviting someone, like I said, then I strongly believe that I can help them and that I’m the best fit for them out there. So I think that that really shines through when you’re talking to someone. They get that you’re not just trying to push them into a service or add money to your portfolio. It’s more about making recommendations that are sincere and very well thought out. I think that’s just always been what’s really helped me is being sincere and I get excited when I’m talking to someone. I can see the path, I can see what they can accomplish, and I feel like I’m part of the team.
