How do we get past the roadblocks we face? It all depends on how we decide to navigate them! Today I want to pose the question, “should you double down when you hit a roadblock, or find a way around the barrier holding you back?” Discovering the path of least resistance on the journey toward your goals is the key to success without suffering. The truth is, there are many possible paths to your desired destination. Instead of trying to ‘break boulders’, learn how to recalculate your route when you hit a roadblock along the way!.

Steve Napolitan: Welcome to More Business More Life Daily. On today’s episode, I’m going to talk about those things that we think we can’t do or they’re holding us back, how do we get through that and achieve what we want?
So, often we can get caught up on roadblocks, or different things getting in our way. Or it’s really hard, I don’t know what to do from this point. And that can happen. Sometimes we don’t always have the answer. But one thing that I’ve done in my life, now, that’s made a huge difference is I start to step back. In my younger years, so often, we would just plow through. Like something got really hard and I would just double down, or put the extra hours in, or all of these different things. And, now, when things get difficult, or even stop, like some projects get a halt, that’s a time for me, now, to reflect and say, “Okay, how else can I get there? What other way can we get there? What other roads are there? There are different ways to think about it.”
And if I can ask myself that question, then I typically find the answer. And then it’s not always that I find the answer, but then I would go to my team, and then we would brainstorm. What other ways can we finish this? How else can we get there? And then, when that doesn’t work, then then we might bring in a consultant, a coach, different things so that we can get where we want to go. And this is what we need to do in our life.
And just as a story that I might’ve adapted from one of my teachers, Michelle Masters, we talk about if you’re in your car and you’re driving along and, let’s say, you’re going somewhere, and you have a meeting, or some destination. And you’re driving along, and then you’re on the highway, and then the off ramp, wherever you’re going to exit to get to where you want to go, is closed. When in your life have you actually pulled over your car, saw that it was blocked off, and then just sat there, and it said three days from now the road will reopen.
And then, do you call the people you’re going to go meet and say, “Hey, I can’t get there for three days because the road is blocked.” Whenever have we done that? That’s not something that we do. Or maybe you like blow through the construction walls, and then maybe your car goes into a ditch, or something. Like who knows what’s it going to do? We’re not going to … and that’s what happens if you try to plow through, if something blocks you and you just try to plow through danger might be on the other side, things might be happening.
One time I was at an event, there was about 100 of us, and there was a basketball court outside. And then, they did an exercise for all of us that we had to cross the basketball court, and everyone had to go across the basketball court in a different way. And the first person walks across, now no one else can walk across. But someone could else could walk backwards, maybe someone could do sidestep, maybe someone could dance across. I don’t know why at that time I decided to do burpees, and I did burpees all the way across. By the time I got to the other side, I thought, “Oh, that probably wasn’t a good idea.” I made it, but it was definitely, I had put a lot of effort into it. And whatever way, there was so many ways. And it was just an exercise for us in our mind to remind ourselves there’s many ways to do the same thing. We all crossed that basketball court, but not one of us did it in the same way.
So, start to ask yourself, “How else can I get there?” And when you can’t answer that question, then ask the people around you. Then, maybe look at people that have done it before, how did they do it? And study that. Read their books, or maybe call them and get them as a consultant, mentor, coach, whatever you want to call it. So, I just want to put that there, when you’re stopped there’s always another way. And I truly believe that. And if you start to play that into your life, you’ll start to see how that can play into your life as well.
