Before Guillain-Barré Syndrome, I was running trails. Mostly hills and gaining elevation too. Really getting a workout.

 

Now, my focus is on walking a good distance on flat land. I’m still getting out on trails and being with nature as much as I can.

 

I’ve said this for years, but it is even more relevant for me now. I like to call it movement, instead of working out. Nothing against working out. For me this is about taking the popular meaning it has, which typically, is hitting the gym.

 

If I walk a minimum of 30-minutes a day, I notice the difference in how I feel. More energetic. I feel my body more. Feels like it comes more alive. I’m happier. Overall, I feel more energy for the day. I like to walk about an hour a day. Starting to get to those lengths more regularly.

 

I also have integrated a lot more stretches, yoga and Feldenkrais movements. Easy stuff that I can do anywhere, yet very useful for a healthy body.

 

I also want to say, so often when we want to feel differently with our body or lose weight, most of us immediately think of working out. I’ve found over the years and especially now, during my recovery, that it is a priority, but not the highest. Here’s my priority in order for my health:

 

1. Mindset – I meditate daily and focus on what I’d like, not what I don’t want or what I’m upset with. Where your focus goes, energy flows. Choose gratitude…appreciate all results in your life. They are there for a reason. I got to do Guillain-Barré Syndrome. I feel blessed and I’m grateful for all it taught and brought me.

2. Nutrition – what I put in my body is the next priority. Clean water, clean food. Most important is not having pesticides. I believe if we want to eliminate many diseases we can do so by not consuming poisons that are in our food and water. Read about what you eat. Notice the ingredients.

3. Movement – our bodies activate on another level when we keep constant movement in our life. You don’t need to do big workouts. Those can be useful, for sure, but are not necessary to maintain. In fact, change is great for your body. Try lots of different things and find things you enjoy. If you like to swim, do that. If you like to go on hikes, do that. As long as you’re moving. The lymph system does not activate the way we need without movement.

 

I still have a lot to learn in all these areas. The more I do learn, I continue to confirm, my mindset is most important. Then what I eat and then movement. They are all important and I have made them a part of my daily life.
