“We can feel that we’re trapped by our jobs, with the responsibilities that we have as parents and as providers. But there is always an alternative – you just have to make that effort to find the difference.” —
Bobi Kaponay

Welcome back to the Steve Show! Today we’re embarking on a three-part series showcasing the amazing journey of the Kaponay family. In part 1, we’re going to look at the big picture of how you can choose your life without reservations or limitations. Their story and insights will inspire you to really start choosing BIGGER in life. Ready your pen and notepad, too; this 3 part series includes journal prompts to help you shift your mindset and take action toward creating freedom!

George and Bobi Kaponay left their corporate suburban lifestyle to travel the world for 8 years while raising and homeschooling their two children. In the process, they’ve formed several successful family businesses, raised two driven entrepreneurs, and created total freedom in their lives. Sound like an impossible dream? Read on to discover the Kaponay family’s key insights to choosing your life…BOLDLY!

Commit To Your ‘Why’

Finding the motivation to go after your dreams requires a strong connection with your ‘why’. For George and Bobi, that ‘a-ha’ moment came during a stressful morning rushing their kids to school in a snowstorm. Bobi recalls, “in that moment I realized that we bring children into the world and we surrogate them out to other people, but truthfully, that’s not us.”

George and Bobi’s foundational ‘why’ became being more together as a family and learning more together as a family – and that powerful desire launched them into a homeschooling lifestyle while traveling the world. What is YOUR reason for pursuing big change in your life?

  • Make a list of situations and limitations in your current life that you want to leave behind.
  • If you had total freedom, what would you have MORE of in your life? Write it down!

Include Others In Your Journey

Is a part of your ‘why’ getting to collaborate and spend more time with the people you love and admire? Include their insights in your action plan! George and Bobi’s daughter noted, “our parents actually did sit us down and said, what would you like to learn? What are your passions? What are your desires and dreams? And then they listened.” Look to the people you want on your journey – their feedback will provide inspiration and valuable insights into action steps moving forward.

  • Make a list of the people you want to have with you on your journey.
  • Ask them how they want to be involved and their unique desires and vision for the future. Record their responses!

Correct Your Tunnel Vision

When you’re wrapped up in your day-to-day life, it’s easy to get in the habit of thinking small – focusing on what is directly in front of you. Bobi suggests that the best thing you can do is to widen your line of vision. She suggests, “make a real effort to see the world’s a much bigger place. There is always an alternative…you just have to make that effort to find the difference.”

  • Write down a list of the situations and responsibilities that make you feel ‘trapped’ or ‘stuck’ where you are.
  • Next to each ‘sticking point’, write a list of every possible alternative. Don’t be afraid to think big or do the research to discover possibilities you hadn’t considered.

Is your journaling hand on fire yet? We know the exercises in this series are going to reignite your motivation and passion! What freedom do you want to create this year? Share your questions about today’s big ideas in the comments below – I read and respond to each one. And don’t forget to tune in for part two of the series…

As always, until we meet again…
