Being stuck in bed is not my thing. I’ve been such an active person in my life. My Mom once said she tried to put me in front of Sesame Street, looking for a break, and I wouldn’t have more than a minute of it, before I ran off.
My adult life hasn’t changed much. I like to move my body everyday. Being paralyzed and stuck in bed was one of the hardest parts of Guillain-Barré Syndrome.
My arms came back online first and I was able to have short FaceTime calls with my kids. One of my daughters would try to make me laugh with her funny hairdos. My face has still not recovered, so I had to tell her I was laughing on the inside.
My wife brought my Rubik’s cube into the hospital and I was able to test my hand-eye coordination. At first it was a tough workout, mentally and physically… and I solved it.
As my legs started to have movement, I was able to roll over on my side. Again, at first, this was a full workout for me. I’d take a nap after getting on my side.
These were all major milestones in my recovery.
What things in your life seem small, yet looking back, you notice now, they were a big deal?

Hi Steve,
I admire your positive attitude, as well as your openness and honesty regarding your long and arduous path to get your full life back. May God continue to bless you each step of the way.
BTW – we meet a few times years ago during Dean & Lori’s New Year’s parties…!
Hello Art, I remember those parties fondly, they were always good times bringing in the New Year. How are you? Still in Tracy?
I appreciate your kind words. I’m continuing to heal and plan to share along the way.
