“You control your time. No one else does.” – Steve Napolitan
Do any of these thoughts sound familiar to you?- “I wish I had more time!”
- “There aren’t enough hours in my day!”
- “I have too much to do!”
Step 1: STOP
The first thing you need to do is STOP at the end of the day and take time today to prioritize tomorrow. What do I mean? Say you finish your day at 5 pm. If you need to be done by 5 pm, then STOP working at 4:50pm. Use the remaining 10 minutes to figure out what you need to get done tomorrow. To help you do this, you answer the following questions:- What did I get done today?
- What didn’t I get done today?
- What needs to get done tomorrow?
Step 2: SIFT
Look at that list, and ask yourself the following questions:- What can I ELIMINATE? There are things you don’t really need to be doing. For example, do you really need to wash your car today? Is it really mission critical? If not, REMOVE it from your list. Immediately, it’ll lessen what you think you MUST do the next day.
- What can I DELEGATE? Even if you have no employees. Are there other people whom you can have help you? For example, having someone else help clean your house? If you do those things yourself, and you make good money, what is the opportunity cost of doing housework? If you earn $100/hour and a cleaner costs $50/hour, then you are better off focusing on your business!
- What can I AUTOMATE? Can you leverage systems and technologies to help you? For example, you can download an app, automate emails to your customers, or the like.
- Write down what you can do the next day.
- Eliminate, delegate, and automate.
- Review and prioritize.
